10 Reasons Your Preschooler Should Dance!

10 Reasons Your Preschooler Should Dance.

Are you looking for a new activity for your preschooler? Here are 10 reasons you should consider enrolling your 3-5 year old in a dance class!

1. Discover Confidence

We all want to see our preschoolers blossom into independent, confident little people. A dance class is the perfect place to unlock this confidence, and encourage them to reach their potential! While they might take a little bit to warm up, week by week your little one will build confidence as they become familiar with their teachers and learn the way a dance class runs. In a no-pressure classroom setting, they can develop their skills and learn to shine.

Performances are also a great way to push them out of their comfort zone and show how far they've come. Our annual D4F mini's concerts are fun and exciting, as you get to watch your little one shine on stage!

2. Inspire Creativity

Little ones love to use their imagination! Dance classes utilise imaginative play to encourage a range of movement, from frog jumping, painting rainbows in the sky, slithering like a snake or taking off in a rocket ship!

In dance class, your preschooler will have the freedom and space to explore their body and it's possibilities, unlocking their creativity as we learn through play!

3. Challenge Coordination

By learning foundational ballet technique in a fun way, your preschooler will reap all the benefits of a dance class! Your little one will develop strength and flexibility as they learn to control their body, challenging their balance, engaging their centre of gravity, challenging both gross-motor and fine-motor skills and exploring their full range of motion.

Children will also learn spatial awareness as they manoeuvre through the dance studio, twirling, skipping and jumping as they go. We often incorporate fun equipment into our classes, including tunnels, balance beams, tumble mats and obstacle courses to offer a greater challenge!

4. Musical Appreciation

Dance classes are a fantastic place for your little one to discover the joys of music. In class they will learn the foundations of rhythm, tempo, pitch, dynamics and develop an appreciation for a whole range of musical styles from classical to salsa, Disney favourites to country, jazz and pop.

In our mini's class we love to utilise musical instruments like maracas and tambourines, as well as stamping, clapping, singing and making music with our bodies!

5. Learn Classroom Skills

Classroom etiquette can be tricky for preschoolers. A dance class is a great way to expose them to the these skills and help them understand these foundations before they head to big school! They'll learn important skills such as listening to a teacher, following instruction, taking turns, sharing, asking permission and patience, which are vital for school readiness.

6. Socialise

Dance classes are a great place to make friends! Socialising is so important for preschool children, exposing them to different people and developing their language and interpersonal skills. Dance classes require teamwork, patience and listening, so is a great place for them to practice these essential life skills and learn to relate to other people.

The bonds formed in dance classes can blossom into lifelong friendships, not just for kids but for mums too! Interact with other kids at a similar age in your local area and enjoy doing what they love, together!

7. Develop Gross Motor Skills

Children need to use their bodies to understand what they are capable of and develop gross motor skills. Skipping, jumping, balancing, hopping, spinning and reaching are important body movements that will support your child for the rest of their life. These movements also help to activate pathways in the brain that will become the foundations of all their movement, from running track and field to writing!

In dance class they will reach up high and crouch down low, tiptoe on a beam, balance on one foot, pat their head and rub their tummy, leap, skip and hop around the room, crawl through tunnels and roll down our soft acro mats, building and challenging their strength and coordination as they go!

8. Improve Fitness

Dance classes are a great class to get the blood pumping! A ballet, jazz or acro class is the perfect place for them to build strength, flexibility and agility, as they challenge their body through it's full range of motion. Aerobic exercise improves physical fitness, reduces stress, improves heart function and is great for the overall health of your preschooler.

9. Burn Some Energy

We all know that preschoolers never stop! From the moment they wake up until their head hits the pillow, they are go, go, go! It can be hard to know what to do with all that energy, but a dance class gives them a fantastic opportunity to channel it into something fun and exciting.

Who knows, after class they might even sit still long enough for you to drink a hot coffee in peace!

10. HAVE FUN!

More than anything else, preschool dance classes are FUN! Our mini's preschooler classes are jam-packed class full of catchy songs, imaginative play, exciting props and dances about all your little one's favourite things.
